Specifics

Standing at 35cm x 76cm x 148cm this bewitching bureau has a high shelf and a flat surface area on top. The back panel is decorated in a diagonal checkerboard with fine gold detail. You can place your own sign over the 'Remedies & Cures' text if needed, the sign area measures 50cm x 14 cm. The door has been transformed into a frame allowing a peep inside to the fixed shelf. The cupboard perched on little curved legs, it’s a tad reminiscent of a Victorian stove, and so needs to stand on flat ground.

Story

This cupboard arrived a very sorry state indeed from the same house clearance as the Edwardian Deckchair and Ornate Metal Plant stand. House clearance is always the saddest reasons that items are acquired and this item was so neglected it was almost reduced to a sorry pile of wood destined for disposal. Fortunately it’s charm shone through and it received the rescue it deserved. Sanded back, beautiful carved detail emerged from the thick, hardened black paint drips. The charcoal tint on the wood comes from the remains of the black paint and gold writing was added afterwards.

Inspiration

For a magical witches and wizards, Halloween or Harry Potter theme the shelves could be packed with potions and spell ingredients. For a historical event the shelf could display some of the down right peculiar cures of the Victorian era. For a wedding, perhaps add a kooky guest book where partygoers are encouraged to write their most odd advice to keep a happy marriage. Or failing that, there’s no harm in employing it as a good old-fashioned drinks bar.
